Summer Housekeeper (Temporary)


The University of Washington’s Housing and Food Services (HFS) has an outstanding opportunity for 70+ Summer Conference Housekeepers.

At the conclusion of spring quarter, as most of the residence halls are vacated for the summer; we offer the student rooms and facilities in these halls to visiting conference groups affiliated with the educational and professional development mission of the University. The conferences we host range from business and professional organizations to sports camps, youth groups and a variety of foreign study groups visiting the country for the first time.

Our Summer Housekeeping Teams support the HFS summer conference operation by providing customer service and preparing and maintaining our facilities for guests. Housekeepers are responsible for setting up and cleaning overnight guest rooms, meeting rooms and dining rooms for conference delegates. In addition to the job-specific duties and responsibilities of the position and services mentioned above, our hourly staff are occasionally required to work in other areas of the Department.

The Summer Conference Program presents an excellent opportunity for hourly staff and students to gain valuable work experience and earn money, $15.31 per hour, in fact!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Setting up and cleaning overnight guest rooms in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  • Sweeping, moping and vacuuming floors.
  • Emptying trash and recycle containers.
  • General cleaning of guest rooms.
  • Cleaning private restrooms in guest rooms.
  • Making beds and setting out conference materials for guest use including hangers, welcome cards, cups and soap.
  • Setting tables and chairs in meeting rooms and dining rooms per the requested room set by the conference.
  • Other general custodial duties as needed.

 REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physically able to perform work.
  • Ability to understand and produce written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate in a variety of situations.
  • Work in collaboration with others.  
  • An eye for detail.
  • Dedication to a high level of customer satisfaction.


Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED:

Prior housekeeping or related work experience.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
  • Housekeepers are typically scheduled to work 20 - 40 hours per week. Throughout the summer, your workload may vary depending upon the number and size of conference groups.
  • Housekeepers work schedules are developed by the Custodial Supervisor to provide for an equal number of staff, 7 days a week. Supervisors do their best to ensure that each employee has two consecutive days off each week. Housekeepers are expected to request days off around our conference activity and resulting work schedules. Traditional holidays (i.e., July 4th and Labor Day) are considered regular workdays.
  • The nature of our conference activity is such that housekeeping staff are required to work a full schedule from the time the residence hall closes in June 2017, until all halls are converted back to academic-year student housing prior to the start of Fall quarter in mid-September.
