Accessibility

Studying at the 8 in McMahon

The UW is committed to providing access, equal opportunity and reasonable accommodation in its services, programs, activities, education and employment for individuals with disabilities. An outside organization using UW facilities must assure that its events meet the same standards of accessibility and accommodation.

Advertising and other descriptions of events must include notice that accessibility accommodations will be provided and must include a means of contacting the conference to request accommodation. Some commonly requested accommodations are sign language interpreting, assertive listening devices, alternative format materials, mobility access to facilities and disabled parking.

Please consider the needs of all guests with disabilities early in the planning process, especially when selecting event facilities, printing promotional and registration materials, and budgeting for the expense of disability-related accommodations.

Sign Language Interpreting

The Disability Services Office (DSO) Interpreter Coordinator is available for locating and scheduling sign language interpreters or real-time captioners. Interpreter costs are the responsibility of the conference; therefore, budgeting for the event should include sufficient money to cover the potential cost. Information about fees for this service can be obtained from the Sign Language Interpreter Coordinator at 206-543-1415 (voice) or 206-543-6452 (TTY) or dso@uw.edu.

Assertive Listening Devices

For those who are hard of hearing, the DSO has vendor information for large group rentals.

Alternative Format Materials

The conference should anticipate the possibility that a guest may request written material in an alternative format such as enlarged print, braille, audio recording, etc. Enlarged print can usually be easily produced by the conference. The DSO can help identify resources for brailing or audio recording if requested.

Access to Meeting Rooms, Bathrooms and Event Facilities

Guest inquiries as to the accessibility of specific meeting facilities should be referred to the DSO for the most current information. For more information, contact the DSO.

Disabled Parking

Contact UW Commuter Services, Special Events, at 206-685-7167, to indicate the number of vehicles expected and the number of parking spaces needed for persons with disabilities. Guests can be directed to contact the DSO for specific assistance with disabled parking requests or routing directions.
