Gender-Neutral Housing Options
HFS strives to make on-campus housing a welcoming and safe space for all students.
Gender-neutral housing is an option in which two or more students share a room, apartment or cluster regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, identity, or expression. It is a program that broadens student's choices and helps ensure living arrangements that are welcoming and inclusive for all members of our community.
Gender-neutral housing may be especially appealing to:
- Students in the process of discovering their gender identity
- Students who do not wish to identify themselves by gender
- Members of the LGBTQ, gender and sexual diversity, and ally communities
- Students who feel more comfortable with a roommate of a different gender
The intent of the gender-neutral option is not for heterosexual couples to live together within the UW residence halls. However, gender-neutral housing is open to any self-nominating student.
Students who are assigned to a room in a gender-neutral area will be asked to complete a pledge to ensure mutual understanding of community goals and expectations.
If you are interested in living in our gender-neutral housing, please request it on your housing application.
If you are looking for on-campus housing that is intended for mixed-gender pairs or groups, you might consider requesting a 12-month apartment in Nordheim Court. Students requesting mixed-gender housing are not required to complete the gender-neutral pledge.
If a roommate of a student in a gender-neutral room elects to change their housing or moved out before the end of the agreement period, the student moving out or the students remaining in the space should contact the Student Services Office with another roommate to fill the vacancy. If the space is not filled in this manner, HFS reserves the right to assign any student who agrees to the gender-neutral agreement to the vacant space, convert the room to single-gender, and/or relocate the remaining residents. Students are strongly encouraged to work with the Student Services Office and their Resident Director to fill any vacancies.
