The primary purpose of floor/building lounges within the UW residence halls is to provide living-room spaces for students to study, relax and gather informally with residents of their community. HFS recognizes peer interaction as a valuable component of students' educational experiences and sees the lounges as vehicles for bringing students together for organized educational and social functions. This policy regarding the use of floor/building lounges has been established with a view to maintaining informal student interaction, while accommodating planned programs and events.
If you are a student living in the HFS residence halls and would like to request space for a meeting, please complete the online request form. The request form must be submitted no later than three business days prior to the event. Instructions are included on the form.
Floor lounges may only be reserved for programs sponsored by HFS.
All programs and activities must be approved by the Resident Director. The following guidelines define the use of main lounges, on the ground or entry level, in the following facilities: Haggett Hall, Hansee Hall and McCarty Hall.
- Planned events and programs must be sponsored by a Resident Adviser or a resident of the building.
- UW personnel will grant or deny use requests on a content-neutral basis, and reasonable content-neutral time, place and manner restrictions may be applied on a nondiscriminatory basis.
- Programs and activities must adhere to all UW and HFS policies and regulations, including strict respect for quiet and courtesy hours.
- Programs and activities must be open to all residents of UW housing.
- Sponsors must ensure that one-half of the participants are residents of UW housing. The remaining one-half of the participants must be the guests of specific residents, and while in the building must be hosted at all times by a resident. The total number of participants must not exceed the capacity of the room.
- Advertisements and other publicity must be approved by the Resident Director, and must clearly identify the sponsors and any UW affiliated and off-campus clubs, organizations, or speakers who are part of the program. Publicity is allowed only in designated locations as defined in the Residence Hall Posting Policy.
- Any particular UW affiliated or off-campus club, organization or speaker may be invited to conduct no more than one program per quarter in the main lounge of each residence hall.
- The main lounges are available for reservation from 5 pm–1 am.
- Reservation forms are available through the Residential Life Office. Reservations will be taken starting on the first day the residence halls are open autumn quarter and may be made up to one month in advance for the academic year. Reservations will only be made for planned programs.
- The cleaning and resetting of the lounge is the responsibility of the sponsor. All rooms must be cleaned, garbage removed and furniture returned to the original position.
- Residence hall students are encouraged to host ongoing activities and meetings in alternative meeting spaces available through the Conference Services Office (Haggett Hall, phone 206-543-7636) with the prior approval of the Resident Director. Forms are available in the Residential Life Office.
- Main lounges may not be used for commercial purposes such as sales, advertising or promotional activities.
- At the discretion of HFS, sponsors may be required to hire UW Police Officers for security at large-scale events. Security expenses are the responsibility of the sponsors.
- Failure to respond to the directions of a UW official, including Residential Life, custodial, dining hall staff, or UW Police Officers may result in the loss of room use privileges and/or other UW action.
- Sponsors are responsible for upholding the lounge-use policy. Violation of lounge-use policy may result in a warning and could result in loss of room use of privileges and/or other UW action.

Private Areas in the Residence Halls
- While in a residence hall building, all nonresidents must be accompanied by a resident of the building at all times. Any nonresident who is not accompanied by a resident host is subject to being escorted out of the building and may be charged with criminal trespassing by the UW Police Department.
- Fire codes state that individual resident rooms may not have more than ten people inside without having two separate exits through doorways. Windows are not considered acceptable fire exits.
