Early Fall Start Housing

Early Fall Start (EFS), an elective program that runs from August 22 through September 15, 2017, is designed to give freshmen an early start to the academic year. Students take one intensive four-week course prior to the beginning of the 2017–18 academic year and earn five credits. Students also participate in related academic and social events and may choose to live in the residence halls.

Residence hall housing is available to UW students registered for the EFS program. Students will be assigned to rooms in Lander Hall or Alder Hall.

We expect to have space available for all eligible students who apply for EFS housing.

The EFS priority application deadline is June 30. Students applying before that date will have a better chance of being assigned to their preferred area.

Any student registered for EFS is eligible to live on campus during EFS. You are eligible for EFS housing even if you are not planning to live in on-campus housing during the 2017–18 academic year.

If you apply for both EFS and academic year housing it is likely you will be assigned to the same room for both EFS and 2017–18.

There will be some exceptions, however:

  • If you request a Living-Learning Community for 2017–18
  • If you are assigned for EFS after you have been assigned for autumn quarter

If you have a mutually requested roommate for the academic year, we will do our best to assign you together for both EFS and autumn quarter. If your requested roommate is not living on campus during EFS, we will try to assign you with someone who has not applied for academic yearhousing, so that your academic year requested roommate can be assigned with you starting in autumn quarter. It is not possible to request a roommate just for EFS.

If you plan to live in a sorority or fraternity during autumn quarter

You will be able to live on campus during EFS even if you will be living in a sorority or fraternity during autumn quarter. However, you will be required to move out of your EFS room by 8 am on Saturday, September 16.

Checking In

Check-in for EFS will take place on Saturday, August 19. You will be assigned a check-in time based on your room number, which you will be notified of when you receive your room assignment.

Please arrive to move in for EFS at your assigned time. Before you get here, print the Vehicle Information Placard and fill it out.

From I-5, take the NE 45th Street exit and proceed east on NE 45th Street for several blocks. After a few blocks, please move to the right lane. Take a right onto 15th Avenue NE and proceed straight for several more blocks. As you approach NE Pacific Street, you will want to proceed straight for one more block to turn right onto NE Boat Street. You’ll then go one more block to turn right on Brooklyn Ave NE and then turn left in approximately one-half block into the W-35 parking lot. You will then be directed to your building by staff as space allows.

If you are checking in after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, please go to your residence hall front desk to sign for your keys.

There is a specific location for taxis and shuttles to drop off passengers at Lander Hall. Please provide the following directions to your driver.

Please note these instructions because alternative routes may not allow you to drop off your passenger in the correct location.

  • Take I-5 north
  • Take Exit 169 toward NE 45th Street and turn right on NE 45th Street*
  • Turn right on Roosevelt Way NE
  • After a few blocks, turn left onto NE Campus Parkway (if you drive across the University Bridge, you’ve gone too far0
  • Immediately merge right and park in the taxi/shuttle drop off zone on the north side of Lander Hall

*If using the I-5 northbound express lanes, take Exit 169 toward NE 42nd Street, then continue by turning right on Roosevelt Way NE, then left onto NE Campus Parkway.

Please make sure that you park in these zones so we can efficiently and effectively assist your passenger.
